Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that originated thousands of years ago, but now, it’s taking the media by storm. This technique involves swishing oil, typically coconut oil, in the mouth to improve oral health. So, why is this traditional practice suddenly all the rage? Let’s dive into the reasons behind its growing popularity and how to get started.

1. Reducing Bacteria

One of the most significant benefits of oil pulling is its potential to reduce harmful bacteria in our mouths. Our mouths are home to a diverse community of bacteria, some beneficial and others harmful. When oil is swished around the mouth, it’s believed to ‘pull’ bacteria away from the teeth and gums. This can lead to a decrease in dental plaque, which is a breeding ground for bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. It’s also a healthier and all-natural alternative to mouthwash, which is highly composed of harsh chemicals. It has also been found to be just as effective! It’s no doubt that oil pulling is a great way to contribute to a healthier oral microbiome.

2. Whiter Smile

Who doesn’t love a bright, white smile? Oil pulling has gained a reputation for being a natural teeth-whitening remedy. While it doesn’t bleach teeth like conventional whitening products, many people report that their teeth appear whiter and brighter after regular oil pulling. There isn’t scientific evidence to back these claims, but this could be due to the removal of plaque and surface stains, leading to a more natural shine and whiter appearance of the teeth.

3. Rid Bad Breath

Bad breath, a condition known as “halitosis”, is caused by bacteria and leftover food particles in the mouth. Oil pulling can remove bacteria and toxins from the mouth and potentially reduce the foul smell that can emanate from the oral cavity.

4. Reduce Inflammation

Gum inflammation, bleeding gums, and diseases like gingivitis are often the result of bacterial overgrowth. Oil pulling with coconut oil has been shown to help reduce this inflammation due to its antibacterial effects. By decreasing the number of harmful bacteria, the gums may become healthier and less inflamed. This can be particularly beneficial for those looking to maintain their gum health without the use of harsh chemical products.

How To Oil Pull

One of the best parts about oil pulling is that it is simple and inexpensive. Here are a few steps you can follow:

  1. Measure one tablespoon of coconut oil. (Sunflower or sesame oil can be used too)
  2. Swish the oil around your mouth for 5-20 minutes, ensuring the oil reaches all corners of your mouth.
  3. After swishing, spit the oil out (avoid swallowing it as it contains bacteria and toxins) and rinse your mouth with water.
  4. For best results, do this first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything.
  5. Stay consistent! Regular practice is key to experiencing the benefits.
